That prompted Marcus to team with Arthur Blank to start their own business. In 1979 their first store opened in Atlanta, Georgia - the Home Depot. Today, over 2,000 stores including overseas operations, and annually over $159 billion in sales.

ADVERSITY DEVELOPS MATURITY
This must be the week for all the cliche's about adversity... "become better, not bitter." Wisdom and maturity are usually born out of difficult times. We get very little wisdom from success. In fact, what is typically born out of success is pride and arrogance. As the world continues to change at faster rates, problems we face and overcome now prepare us for future challenges.
Research is showing some companies 20 years ago wouldn't hire someone if they had experienced significant failure. Some companies today won't hire someone if they haven't failed at something and overcame it.

This may sound ironic, yet when we have experienced a lot of adversity, we are actually in a better position to achieve success than people who haven't. When life is tough, yet we keep getting up on our feet, we become tough. We build strength, tenacity, experience, wisdom, and resilience. People who develop those qualities can achieve success and sustain it better than when it comes quickly and easily. Don't give up, better days are coming!

Reinhold Niebuhr prayed a prayer in a little church in Massachusetts. Only a small group of people were in the audience that day. After service, one person liked it so much that he asked for a copy. Niebuhr responded, handing over a crumpled piece of paper saying, "I doubt I will have any more use for it."
